Mission Statement
MCC Volleyball Club is dedicated to empowering youths and future young adults by encouraging personal growth, promoting sportsmanship, and teaching the fundamentals of volleyball in an environment where “Motivate, Congratulate, Celebrate” is the core foundation of training on and off the court.
Why MCC Volleyball Club
MCC Volleyball Club began with a simple vision: to create a nurturing environment where young athletes could discover their love for volleyball. Over the years, our club has grown from a small group of passionate players and coaches into a vibrant community dedicated to supporting youth development, both on and off the court.
We are a club that focuses on creating a strong team by teaching each individual to be responsible for their own journey as well as to learn to control their thinking, grow as a person, be a positive contributor to the team, and improve as a volleyball athlete. We measure our success not by wins and losses or rankings, but by who we become in the process; how each individual unlocks a better version of themselves, their teammates, and their opponents through positive reactions to all situations.
Our philosophy aligns with that of Guy Enriques Team Camp (https://guysvolleyball.com) and we incorporate many of their methods and practices into our program.
From the Club Director
Hello, my name is Dave Kim. I was introduced to playing volleyball shortly after immigrating from Japan to Tacoma, WA in the mid-80s, when I was still in my early teens. I quickly fell in love with the sport because it enabled me to connect with teachers and peers despite the language barriers. I continued to play recreationally through my 20s until I met a group of players interested in competing in USAV and other competitive tournaments. Through these players and experiences, I learned necessary skills and strategies required of the players and the team to compete at various levels. I was introduced to club coaching in 2010 where I quickly realized the importance of life lessons we learn and the journey we all take as part of our growth while sharing the love for volleyball.
In 2013, shortly after my partners and I started REACH VBC in Puyallup, WA, I was introduced to Guy Enriques Team Camp (GETC). As I was sitting in the gym listening to the opening remarks of Coach Guy, I realized how much of his philosophies and vision aligned with what I had learned and valued through volleyball and life. As I incorporated the things we emphasized in GETC to my club teams, I started to see exponential growth and success in the players and teams that invested in those philosophies and methods.
The aim of this club is to support the development of youth and young adults with the skills and confidence to be empowered to make changes through volleyball. The coaching approach emphasizes and encourages learning from failures by making continuous improvements – a better mistake. The MCC principles—Motivate, Congratulate, and Celebrate—are the central elements for encouraging personal growth and development.
Outside the world of volleyball, I work as a software engineer at Nike. I have a daughter and a son who are in their 20s; and a granddaughter that brightens up my day with her smiles.
